<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">While I adore creating designs and knitting them until the process is perfect, I have to admit that I detest transcribing my notes into a coherent and easily understood pattern. That is one of the main reasons why the posts in this blog are few and far between. Another reason is that I hate to stop knitting long enough to type up patterns and post them online. :) </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #6aa84f;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">This summer has been quite productive. Since my last post I have converted several of my patterns to be compatible with mobile devices, designed a triangular shawl in knit, a triangular shawl in crochet, two rectangular wraps, three hats and a <a href="http://ravel.me/KnitsWithPenguins/slc">very silly pair of slippers.</a></span></span></div>
<div style="color: #6aa84f;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I have even gotten around to writing up the patterns for the knit triangular shawl, one wrap and a hat.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #6aa84f; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">First up, my homage to the late, great <a href="http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/person/189524%7C46617/Elizabeth-Taylor/biography.html">Miss Elizabeth Taylor.</a></span></span></div>
<div style="color: #45818e;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">She inspired me with her elegance, her style and her stunning Violet eyes. Knit with <a href="http://www.blueheronyarns.com/catalog.php?category=51">Blue Heron Yarns "Rayon Metallic"</a>, this shawl sparkles and shines like her signature diamonds.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;">The Crazy Penguin Lady has been on a creative jag for the past few months. When she gets this way, little else matters. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;">Honestly, a lot of other things matter.</i></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="color: black; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: small;">I rarely accom</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">plish much else but getting the pattern ideas onto the </span>needles, finished, photoed and written down as a, hopefully, coherent pattern.</span></div>
<div style="color: black; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;">Sometimes coherency is not an easy thing.</i> </span></div>
<div style="color: black; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">If I do not get them out, they keep me up nights, running around in my head, bouncing off my skull, while I attempt to sleep.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;">You really don't want to see me sleep deprived. Trust me, it isn't pretty.</i></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;"> </i> </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">It takes a lot of fiddling around with graph paper and computer programs and swatching and rejecting and swatching and rejecting and swatching and coming up victorious. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;">Did I ever mention that I absolutely hate swatching?</i></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Then I get to knit the first draft and scribble notes on the original draft of the pattern and frog what didn't work, then knit what I scribbled on the original pattern, then look at it after I have knitted on it for a couple of days and decide that I hate the gauge and frog it again and start over with a different needle or yarn or both</span><span style="color: #990000; font-size: small;">.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;">This happens more times than I care to think about.</i></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i style="color: #990000;"> </i></span><span style="color: #990000; font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">Then I knit a "proof" sample of the pattern to see if all the bugs have been worked out. I generally knit up some of my stash yarn for this. Great way to burn stash. <b>IF</b>, and that is a big <b>IF</b>, that "proof" makes me happy, then I knit it in a yarn that is readily available at <a href="http://www.scarletskein.com/"><span style="color: #0b5394;">The Scarlet Skein.</span></a> </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #990000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i>Sometimes this is a very long process.</i></span></div>
<div style="color: #990000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i>Sometimes this process keeps me from posting patterns that I published on <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/designers/rebecca-stromgren">Ravelry</a> months ago. For this I am truly sorry.</i></span></div>
<div style="color: #990000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Here, for your knitting pleasure, are a shawl, a scarf and a pair of slipper socks.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">

This post has been a long time coming, indeed.</div>
<div style="font-family: verdana; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #330000; font-size: 100%;">I had a slight mishap mid December and suffered a</span><span style="color: #330000; font-size: 100%;"> badly sprained ankle and it pretty much put the kibosh on most of my holiday plans. It took 4 weeks for me to be coherent enough to knit with any creativity and sense, but I have managed to create 5 patterns to share with you.<br />
<br />
Here, now, for your knitting enjoyment are 3 hats, a scarf and a pair of socks.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: 180%; font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/dls/rebecca-stromgren-designs/59038?filename=Oh__Helen_.pdf">Oh, Helen!</a></span> <span style="color: red; font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;"><br />

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size: 85%;"><span style="color: #76a5af; font-size: small;">I</span><span style="font-size: small;"> have been busy these past few weeks designing up a storm and starting to teach classes at The Scarlet Skein! I have also found some notes for items that I created over a year ago. I am currently in the process of deciphering exactly what I wrote and re-knitting or re-crocheting all of them, so I can attempt to write coherent patterns. Amazing how those scribbles were perfectly clear patterns when I jotted them down and now they seem to have been written by a five year old on Jolt Cola and Pixie Stix! More patterns as they are decoded.</span></span></span></div>

The picture shows the shade, well, but it does not show the tweedy flecks of yellow, red and blue. It's a basic triangle shape with a diamond lacey pattern. Not bad for a first shot at this pattern. I want to use the same lacy diamond pattern in a half hex shawl. That will probably be the next foolishly ambitious project. I may just lose my mind totally (Shaddup, you guys. Yeah, you know who you are!) and do the math for another type of lace for the next shawl. </span><br /></p><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#990000;">The shawl is finished. I did manage to go through the "back door", as it were, to get a message through to a fellow Raveler to let my groups know that I am not ignoring their comments, nor bailing out. I just gots issues. </span><br /><span style="color:#990000;">Meanwhile, back on the knitting front.........</span><br /><span style="color:#990000;">I am in the process of inventing another pattern. This time a shawl in a lace pattern. It is triangular and in a worsted weight, but the pattern will probably work for most weights of yarn. I have done all the "math" for the pattern repeats and am currently knitting the prototype. When it is done and blocked I will post pictures here and, Great Cosmic Muffin willing, on Ravelry. I scored the yarn at a Stash Swap at The Scarlet Skein. Still have to find out who donated it. I might just have to make them a gift of the prototype. :)</span><br /><span style="color:#990000;">Still contemplating whether or not I will be making the pattern available, to the general population, at this time. I will get opinions from my fellow Scarlet Skein knitters. I value their opinions. They are some of the most talented people I know. </span><br /><span style="color:#990000;">More news as it happens. Keep your fingers crossed for me, Fellow Ravelers.</span>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-60389654397529753722009-02-27T22:19:00.001-08:002009-02-27T22:21:34.073-08:00Un-UnRaveled<span style="color:#660000;">I knew that if I whined about it, it would fix itself.</span>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-87412631889691582782009-02-27T10:38:00.000-08:002009-02-27T10:55:41.836-08:00UnRavelry Frustrations!<span style="color:#660000;">I<em> really</em> want to play on <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/">Ravelry</a></span>. In short, all I can do, pretty much, is delete old messages. I hit a button to reply, create or view and all I get is the cute little timer swirl of dots going round and round and round. It has been happening since yesterday afternoon. I can go and do other things, in other venues, so the problem is not with my computer. (Obviously, I can post to my blog. Chuckle.) (We generally only see each other once a year, since I moved from Southern California to Central California the summer of 2004.) We were discussing our "favorite" gifts. The subject of gift certificates came up. I like to get them, but I always feel like it is a "cop out" gift when I give them, so I will give one in addition to a gift. My brother said that he adores getting gift certificates. He always has. It's like two gifts in one for him. He gets something and he gets to shop. Then, he looked straight at me and said, "But, if I ever get a gift certificate from you, I will be so pissed." He was wearing the new hat and scarf that I had knitted for him and grinning like a loon. Apparently, according to his lovely wife, he wore the hat that I made him last year to bed. So did his sons. I think that is the best damned compliment that I have ever gotten from my brother. Ever.<br />Sorry there are no pictures, but I failed to take my camera on the trip.Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-23248931704986485082009-01-12T00:24:00.000-08:002009-01-12T00:34:41.520-08:00The New Year and the Old Me.<span style="font-family:georgia;color:#330000;">It's the New Year and I do not make resolutions. I do, however, think up things that I would like to accomplish during the year. I do not "RESOLVE" to do these, I merely would like to. If they do not get done I feel no guilt or angst. If they do get done, I feel pretty darned nifty.</span><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#330000;">With that said...... One of the things that I would like to accomplish, this year, is to be more frequent in my blog posts. I shall, Dear Readers, endeavor to do so. </span>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-33293469649099681352008-12-16T12:21:00.000-08:002009-02-01T10:13:02.119-08:00I have been a bad blogger, so sue me!<span style="color:#663300;">Okay, so I have been a bad blogger and haven't posted since July. I had <em>issues. </em>It is a long story, but the brunt of it is that I enter my knitting in The California Midstate Fair ( <a href="http://www.midstatefair.com/">http://www.midstatefair.com/</a>) </span><span style="color:#663300;">every summer. Not only was my </span><br /><div align="center"><span style="color:#663300;"><strong>Magickal Earth Shawl</strong> </span></div><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280490402353115874" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Kw-apO9QQymZqnaVDM2qjJR6gddu-YOW_NUbtrcyeSNaxZaFnnUhyphenhyphenjSCXOmlAHDMyOxY7niWDAICd-B3i1omEpWvqkKSjeajsL7_DfxEvRBEGgv90Wmw98wnYYLFsdB1kfVhAXj0tow/s320/Magickal+Earth+Shawl.jpg" /><br /><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">mishandled by being placed on </span><span style="color:#663300;"><em>ASTROTURF, </em>someone, in their infinite wisdom of all things knit, decided to judge it as a <strong><em>CROCHETED TABLECLOTH!!!!! </em></strong>Ordinarily this would not bother me, but it was knit of a very fine lace yarn on 2.5 mm needles. Here are my notes from Ravelry on this project. </span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#6666cc;">"I did this one in an insanely short amount of time. I worked on this 8 to 16 hours a day, nearly 7 days a week for 2 months and 1 day. I lost a week because I frogged 32 rows (32,488 stitches approx.) of the Pine Tree Motif, as I did not like the way the corners looked. I modified the center to be an 8 Spoked Wheel instead of The Moon Pattern that is specified in the pattern. When I got to the center, the Wheel of the Year seemed to make more sense than The Moon. ::::Shrugs::: I like the way it ended up. I rate this “Difficult” not because it really is difficult to do, but the shear insanity of the scope of the thing. It was a total labor of love for a friend."</span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#6666cc;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#663300;">Bear in mind that I made this shawl for said friend on the condition that it would be entered in the fair. It is a tradition with me to enter a lace shawl. I sort of justify knitting yet another lace shawl this way. But I digress. </span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">One would think that someone chosen to judge the Home Arts division of a county fair would be able to discern the disparities between items that have been knit and crocheted. </span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">The point of this ramble is that I was indignant, insulted, hurt, enraged and nigh on to tears about this. I worried that when I picked up my items that the shawl would be damaged to the point that I would not be able to send it on to the person it was intended for and that all my work was for naught. It was a bit snagged, but I repaired it with no signs of damage. I mailed the labor of love off, yesterday. I have released the shawl and I have released most of the negative feelings associated with the <strong><em>Unfortunate Event. </em></strong>I am still indignant. So are some of my fellow knitters who know the story. We have a right to be.</span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">Crochet tablecolth, indeed.</span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">By the way, it won 3rd place.</span></div><div align="left"><span style="color:#663300;">You can see more views of this at <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27343700@N05/2626674259">http://www.flickr.com/photos/27343700@N05/2626674259</a></span></div>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-37794074653392947472008-07-20T13:57:00.000-07:002008-12-10T16:35:13.576-08:00<div><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;">Whoops, I Fair Isled Again!<br />I seem to be a glutton for knitting punishment.I made it halfway through the evening of the 17th and I had to knit again. Yes, my arm still hurt, but not as badly. I figured that I could knit on what I consider large knitting needles without pain. That would be US size 8 which are 5 mm. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I started to thumb through my considerable stash of patterns for something in the right needle size and I found this pattern. </span></div><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter07/PATTtam.html">http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter07/PATTtam.html</a></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;">Knowing that I have an aversion to knitting Fair Isle, I still rummaged through my stash of yarn and grabbed my needles and started. Its not that I don't like the look of Fair Isle, quite the opposite. I think it is really lovely. I just don't like <strong><em>doing </em></strong>it. Well, I didn't used to like <strong><em>doing </em></strong>it. This is the fourth Fair Isle project that I have knitted and I didn't hate<strong><em> doing</em></strong> it . It didn't take me forever to <strong><em>do</em></strong> it. I almost liked <strong>doing</strong> it. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;">Just think, in another few years I might even love <strong><em>doing </em></strong>it. </span></div><br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I like the way it came out.</span></div><br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;color:#663300;"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225204894086478706" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOuDgYmcrasZsWbwm4hFqC2d3RjsCeJZSMcOs6wA5DtSOXZP_8nyW3sdOvIF1CPMd6iadB1am_fjkaOSnDSs52D0jD_kIGfM2UuQMbnzitJ_PaHaqIZSUz1CEF21wiCC0qFD9W9p30VRA/s320/Tam+1.jpg" border="0" /><br /></div></span>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-42079198994371249282008-07-17T15:36:00.000-07:002008-12-10T16:35:13.884-08:00Knitting related injuries.<div align="left"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I hate it when this happens. My arm hurts and I want to knit. Its not that I can't knit when my arm hurts. I can but I know better. So I will have to not knit and just sit here and peruse patterns and Jones after yarn. </span></div><div align="left"><br /></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">One of the reasons that my arm hurts is because I pushed myself to finish these socks. </span></div><p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu22m8zui6AUcn8ghR7LnUkgWxtqO9oCZd6m3od0vGboqJ-ypbRHoaEueNgw3IW0ZqQsGBWTCLscWT9MG8ozp7zIlABBZ2yjlvL8SI0QE7sTZ4J6SmaiKHDfegx49Z3zyjvtUoVMRhhx0/s1600-h/Spring+Forward+Socks,+Finished.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224117956751036610" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu22m8zui6AUcn8ghR7LnUkgWxtqO9oCZd6m3od0vGboqJ-ypbRHoaEueNgw3IW0ZqQsGBWTCLscWT9MG8ozp7zIlABBZ2yjlvL8SI0QE7sTZ4J6SmaiKHDfegx49Z3zyjvtUoVMRhhx0/s320/Spring+Forward+Socks,+Finished.jpg" border="0" /></a></p><p align="center"><a href="http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/PATTspringforward.html">http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/PATTspringforward.html</a></p><p align="left"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I am fine when I am working on the first sock, but then I get impatient to finish the second one. I guess it is the dreaded "Second Sock Syndrome" with a twist. A combination of boredom with the pattern and anxiousness to have another pair of socks. So I knit longer than I should, shrugging off the twinges of pain. )You would think that I would learn, but <strong><em>no</em></strong>, it happens at least once every few weeks.) </span></p><p align="left"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I have a thing about socks. I don't think that there is a thing as too many pairs of hand knit socks. It probably stems from a lifetime of ice cold feet. It doesn't matter if it is 115 degrees, my feet are still cold. I never understood the allure of hand knit socks until I started knitting them. Once you wear a really good pair, made of quality fiber you will dread wearing one size fits all, pre-packaged, store bought socks. </span></p><p align="left"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">I am sure that there are some really great socks out there, made of silk and Pima cotton and merino. And I am sure that they cost less than what I pay for the yarn to knit a pair. (Yes, I have been known to pay $25 for yarn for one pair of socks, but it was Alpaca and Silk and Merino wool and it was Handpainted and sooooooooo pretty and soft. Sigh. And it wasn't even for myself. But I digress.) </span></p><p align="left"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">The urge to knit is telling me to go cruise the web for luscious yarns. Ciao for the moment.</span></p><br /><br /><div align="center"></div>Knits with Penguinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947185205387248748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8866911635626551885.post-22684706140823860152008-07-16T18:57:00.000-07:002008-12-10T16:35:14.385-08:00Why do I do this to myself?<p align="right"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtPLbS7TmMrRlCLfHrWgfwnn7xiTa1GESnRFcRMkj8IAHNLH-Aj1lzk6d6gmxH-WBrKYAwtVTpcPt9QE3p9V3JO4FbEOW5t6p7OuKQnItIzO9pXiNiw_PthHOjg_U8skPXc6x8FSW2ESg/s1600-h/Unwoven+Ends.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223802098287565666" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtPLbS7TmMrRlCLfHrWgfwnn7xiTa1GESnRFcRMkj8IAHNLH-Aj1lzk6d6gmxH-WBrKYAwtVTpcPt9QE3p9V3JO4FbEOW5t6p7OuKQnItIzO9pXiNiw_PthHOjg_U8skPXc6x8FSW2ESg/s320/Unwoven+Ends.jpg" border="0" /></a></p><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:85%;color:#663300;">Here is the deal, I love to knit but I hate to do the finish work.
